Learning a foreign language can pay dividends in multiple ways. With our world interconnected and trade becoming increasingly international, a knowledge of foreign languages will give you an advantage and take you far in your business endeavours. A favorite method of learning languages is through the use of apps. In this article we will review two popular language learning apps, Duolingo and Mondly. We will compare both apps and inform you which one we think is best for learning a language.

But first, an introduction to each app.

Duolingo is a popular app that features 33 languages for learning.

I myself  was in the midst of a 1439-day streak learning on Duolingo and wanted to share my honest thoughts.

One of the best features of the app is the ability to learn a language in your own native tongue. So for instance if you want to learn Chinese, you don’t have to only know English. You could be a Spanish speaker and sign up for their course.

This is an advantage over other apps as you’re not required to know English as a native language. So on this point, Duolingo is the more popular choice. But is it the best?

Duolingo offers user-friendly tools that make it easy to learn new language concepts and vocabulary. When you learn on Duolingo, you earn points, called experience points, or XP for short. The app also provides interactive lessons with audio and video support, homework exercises, word lists, flashcards and other aids so you can focus on mastering the material while progressing at your own pace.

Mondly is a language-learning platform that makes it easy for people to learn languages without boring textbooks and long hours of memorization. Mondly offers a variety of tools, including exercises and conversation groups, that make the process of learning new languages easier than ever before.

Mondly offers 41 languages for learning, and among the features is the ability to converse with native speakers in the language you are learning. The app is mentioned in such media outlets as Forbes, CNN, and Bloomberg. In addition, Mondly offers AR possibilities. They do this with games in either language to make it easier to learn. In one game that they feature on their app, you interact with an avatar in the language you are learning.

We wanted to learn Portuguese, and for one month, five minutes a day, we studied with both apps. Duolingo, we found, was a bore at times. While it is true that there are gamification features, such as extra bonus sessions that involve choosing the correct word and writing sentences, these were much more advanced with Mondly.

Cons of Mondly

We found no major drawbacks with Mondly. It is an excellent choice for those learning a language, though it is best if you have at least some knowledge of the language before starting the lessons. This can be done with Duolingo. Perhaps you could work with Duolingo simultaneously while studying your language on Mondly. Duolingo will give you a solid vocabulary base from which you could then improve your knowledge on Mondly. One of the striking features of Mondly is the ability to have conversations with a chatbox in the language you are learning.

The Mondly chatbox recognizes your speech, and will allow you to correct yourself whenever you make a mistake. This can be excellent for improving your conversation skills. One drawback of this feature, however, is that sometimes, depending on your pronunciation, you’ll have to repeat the word. But we found that for most people who are learning languages, this is not a major problem, unless you’ve got a thick accent, And the reality is that not everyone has the talent for pronunciation.

Cons of Duolingo

With Duolingo, you have to be constantly on the app. Mondly offers a hands-free alternative. The advantage of this is that you can learn a language any time with Mondly, no matter what you’re doing. You could even be taking a long walk or sitting on a bench in a park doing nothing and still learn a language. With Duolingo, this is not an issue.

Mondly vs Duolingo: Which App Is Best for Learning a Language?

We feel that Mondly offers a better learning experience overall than Duolingo. Both apps can provide you with a solid knowledge of a foreign language. However, while Duolingo has the advantage of offering to learn a language in your own native tongue, there is minimal conversational practice. Instead, you were given lists of words and are expected to learn them, before taking a test and advancing to the next lesson. This is great for starters, and those who don’t consider themselves to have talent learning languages, But when it comes to truly learning a language, then Mondly is our first choice.

About Gamification on Duolingo

Duolingo does offer gamification possibilities, but they fail in comparison those of Mondly. For instance, on Duolingo, you can compete daily with others in the language you are learning. This consists of a list of your competitors who have also worked on lessons in the language you are learning. That’s it. Just a list, and if you win after accumulating the most points, then you are given some extra hearts. The hearts can be used to pay for advanced lessons, but that is all you get. If you want to have fun learning a language, while competition is great, an actual game scene like that which Mondly offers, is more interesting and best for those learning.

Mondly has a more interactive format that encourages users to use their own learning methods, and injects a lot of fun into the process. For example, one feature of Mondly is that you can create quizzes in order to test yourself on what you’ve learned! This can help you keep track of your progress and motivate you even more to keep learning.

Duolingo’s lessons are tailored for beginner, intermediate, and advanced students while Mondly offers no levels of difficulty; Duolingo is a web-based program that helps beginner, intermediate and advanced students learn new languages by tailoring lessons to their specific needs. On Mondly, you can choose from any level of difficulty without any designated sections for beginning, intermediate or advanced students. Neither platform offers feedback on your progress through the lessons so you don’t know exactly how much progress you’re making and which skills need more work.
