What is my relationship to French and how well do I speak it?
One of my greatest memories growing up in New York was attending weekly language exchanges at several language clubs throughout the city. Among these gatherings, the one at Victor’s Café on New York’s Upper West Side, held on Sunday mornings, stands out. This club was founded by renowned radio personality Barry Farber, who was fluent in at least 25 languages and author of How To Learn Any Language. At the conclusion of our weekly language exchange sessions, we would each tell the same joke in a different language. The joke involved a mouse chasing a hapless cat. Although I don’t remember all the details, the punchline had the mouse explaining to the cat the importance of learning foreign languages. I often volunteered to tell the joke in French. Immersing myself in the beauty of the French language during these sessions was both enlightening and inspiring. I’m also a former employee of Librairie de France (1991-1992 & 1995), where I spent weekends engaging with customers eager to learn French or find captivating reads in the language. For a while, sessions were also held on Saturday mornings at Délices de France, a remarkable deli-restaurant in Midtown on 40th and Madison, offering the best in French sweets and pastries as a bonus to the titillating conversations we had. My passion for French remains unwavering, and I relish every opportunity to deepen my knowledge and share my love for it with others. I first learned French when I was 12 years old, and to this day I speak it fluently.
